BAND TOGETHER FOR FIBER

YK Communications is building a fiber optic network in El Campo. Who’s next for fiber?   That’s completely up to you and your neighbors. You’re in control of how soon you’ll get fiber, since we’re planning our installation schedule based on customer demand.

Here’s how it works:

  • Sign up here by entering your address and letting us know which fiber services you’d like from YK Communications.
  • Talk to your neighbors about the benefits of fiber and encourage them to sign up as well.
  • Check back periodically to see what percentage has been reached of your neighborhood zone’s goal. If you’re at 90 percent, for example, it’s time to use some friendly persuasion on your neighbors to get to 100 percent.
  • When your neighborhood zone reaches its goal, YK Communications will schedule construction for that area.

Remember — when you band together, you get more bandwidth. So sign up and speak up for fiber!

Detailed Construction Plan for Phase 2 Fiber Build Out

9:15am August 14, 2017

Construction Plan

Phase 2 of the  YKC El Campo Fiber Project will continue to expand our services primarily to the community businesses .  Before services can be installed at the customer premise, several steps must be completed.  Below is a detailed list of the processes that will be occurring over the July to December 2017 timeframe.

Planning & Design

Detailed distribution plans must be developed to determine the most efficient locations for the equipment that powers the fiber optic network. These plans determine the size and location of cables and which customers can be connected. The YKC design supports the necessary elements to provide various broadband speeds up to Gigabit level services.  Maps of these zones can be found at elcampofiber.com.

Backbone & Distribution Construction

To accommodate the additional equipment needed for the Phase 2 Project, we are developing an environmentally controlled equipment site centrally located in El Campo.  All distribution facilities will originate from this equipment site.  Conduit paths must be established to place cable providing connectivity from electronics to locations where customers will connect into the YKC fiber network.  Crews will use a process called directional boring to place 1 to 4 orange and blue flexible pipes within city and state rights-of-way.  At various points along the routes, underground or above ground boxes that we call handholes or pedestals, will be placed to access the flexible pipes for the purpose of pulling cables and providing locations for splicing the fiber optic cables.  About 2 miles of distribution cable is proposed in this phase.

Placing Distribution Cables

For each of the zones defined on the map, there is a single point of connection, called a cabinet, where distribution fibers connect to the network backbone.  Distribution cables are engineered and sized to provide a direct fiber connection from each subscriber location back to the cabinet.  Over 6 miles of distribution cable is being placed in this phase.

Splicing

Once the cables have been placed, splicing fiber cables is required at the equipment site, cabinets and any other points where cable sizes change.  Although there are other methods of connecting fibers, we fusion splice our cables to provide the most dependable connections.  This typically takes place in a controlled environment, such as a trailer pulled behind a splicing truck. After preparing each end of the fiber for splicing, an electrical current is passed across the ends to melt the glass and fuse the ends together.  A test is then run on each splice to make sure the quality of the splice is within specifications.  Depending on the number of fibers to be spliced, it is not unusual for single splice location to take 1 to 2 days.

Service Installation & Activation

Once distribution cables have been placed, spliced, and tested, the network is ready to be extended to the customer's premise.  When a request for new service is processed, it is forwarded to our engineering department.  A site visit is made to determine the best location to place the fiber terminal at the customer’s home or office.  The type of service requested (voice, broadband internet, or both) helps determine if an inside or outside location best supports the connection to the YKC fiber network.  Engineering designs an installation plan and schedules construction of a 0.75” flexible duct to pull the fiber cable inside.  We are required to wait 48 hours while various utility lines are located that conflict with the planned construction.  Once the customer's fiber is in place, a splicer is scheduled to connect the customer to the YKC fiber network.  An installer is then scheduled to mount the fiber equipment, make the connection, and any required wiring.  Once the fiber equipment is ready a technician will contact the customer to schedule a time for activation and testing of the services.  The typical timeframe for this part of the process takes about 2 weeks.

YK Communications Begins Phase 2 of El Campo Fiber Build-Out

9:11am August 14, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - JULY 15, 2017

YK Communications has announced that Phase 2 of the El Campo fiber build-out is now underway.

After identifying a need for faster and more reliable broadband services in the area last year, YK Communications made the decision to begin construction of the El Campo fiber optic network. The new fiber network will have 100x the bandwidth of other networks with faster internet service and more accessibility for local homeowners and businesses. The first phase of the project has brought coverage to businesses along the West Loop, as well as dedicated fiber connectivity between the Public Safety Building and City Hall. This also included Business 59/Jackson Street as far north as City Hall.

Construction of Phase 2 began the week of July 10, 2017, and the first three weeks will focus on the Phase 2 backbone and the placement of a building to house electronics and equipment along W. Monseratte Street. Next, construction will begin along Mechanic Street near Jackson Street and continue north towards West Loop. After this portion is completed, construction will occur at Mechanic Street a few blocks south of Jackson Street. During the last segment of Phase 2, there will be a few small additions to the Phase 1 construction to cover areas along E. Jackson Street to Wharton Street.

The entire project is on schedule to be completed by the end of 2017.

“The primary goal for Phase 2 will be to cover the businesses along Highway 71 from Buc-ee’s to Greek Bros,” commented Russell Kacer, President of YK Communications.

YK Communications will be hosting a town hall meeting to review the details of the Phase 2 Fiber Build-Out on Tuesday, July 25, 2017, from 4:00 – 6:00pm in the Myatt Room of the El Campo Civic Center. Members of the company’s team will review construction maps and plans, answer questions, take service orders and more.

YK Communications Builds Fiber to El Campo

9:08am August 14, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 04/06/2017

YK Communications is expanding services to the city of El Campo, Texas, in a move that will bring a fiber optic network to a brand new area.

The company’s legacy of excellence started in 1948, when it was known as Ganado Telephone Company. Today, the rural communications provider delivers a streamlined selection of robust solutions. More than 3,000 South Texas businesses and individuals in Ganado, Louise, and Markham have access to YK Communications’ services, which include broadband internet, residential and business voice plans, satellite and streaming video packages, fiber optic transport, data communications, security systems, and more.

In 2016, YK Communications decided to begin construction of a fiber optic network in El Campo after identifying a need among its residents for quality broadband internet and related services.

Advantages of fiber

For El Campo, this fiber optic network will bring cutting-edge advantages. For instance, fiber will offer 100 times more internet bandwidth than what is available with coaxial, wireless, or copper networks. Businesses will enjoy the competitive edge afforded by fiber’s speed and reliability, as will individuals looking to work from home. Telehealth will be more widely accessible with the new network, as will access to online entertainment, education, and e-commerce. YK Communications expects that El Campo residents will enjoy enhanced lifestyles with an increase in the value of their homes and businesses. Fiber also allows for community-based security systems, concierge and home automation, and the ability to stream arts and educational presentations and performances directly into the home.

Executive Director of the City Development Corporation of El Campo, Carolyn Gibson, commented, “We are thrilled that fiber is coming to the area and look forward to seeing all of these benefits come into fruition for local businesses and individuals.”

This fiber optic network in El Campo is not dependent upon any other providers and will be solely built and maintained by YK Communications. It will feature 100 percent underground construction, which means the network will be stormproof and able to deliver the highest quality and reliability of communications services available in El Campo.

Construction phases

The El Campo network was extended from YK Communications’ existing network in Louise. Construction plans for I-69 meant that the network would need to be built along “back roads” from Louise to El Campo; this has made services possible for El Campo’s southwest corridor including the Western Acres residential area.

During Phase 1, YK Communications worked to bring coverage to businesses along the West Loop. YK Communications partnered with the City of El Campo to provide dedicated fiber connectivity between the new Public Safety Building and the existing City Hall, which led to the first phase being expanded to include Business 59/Jackson Street as far north as City Hall.

Phase 2 will include construction along Highway 71/Mechanic from the West Loop to East 1st Street. This phase is currently in its planning stage. It is slated for construction in early summer of 2017 with construction completion projected by the end of 2017.

Future phases will be based on the take rates needed in the first two phases and will aim for the most densely populated El Campo residential areas. Services available in these areas can be found at www.ykc.com.

Community partnerships

Many YK Communications employees are located in El Campo. The company likes to partner with local schools, hospitals, city departments, and other anchor institutions to encourage community growth. YK Communications also awards scholarships via its Young Family Foundation (youngfamilyfoundation.com). To date, this foundation has awarded more than $850,000 in scholarships, and 2017 will mark the first year a scholarship will be given to an El Campo High School graduate.

Russell Kacer, President of YK Communications and resident of El Campo, said, “YK Communications is proud to be a champion of the local economy. We are excited to expand our networks and work with El Campo. We truly see this as a partnership between our company and this community.”

More information can be found at www.ykc.com or by calling 361-771-3334.
